Effective engagement with S47 processes

Who should attend? Staff and volunteers who have specialist child protection responsibilities and/or involvement in multiagency safeguarding assessment, planning and responses.

Why should they attend? Local learning demonstrates that across the multiagency partnership there is room to improve understanding and consistent application of procedures for responding to children who are suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm. The training will enable participants to provide more consistent and timely responses to safeguarding children.

What are the learning objectives? By the end of the course, delegates will:

• Develop understanding of core procedures to responding to children who are suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm.
• Develop knowledge of the relevant duties and responsibilities contained in London Safeguarding Children Procedures, Lambeth Childre’s Services Procedures and Practice Standards, Royal College Guidance and MPS Guidance.
• Develop understanding of information needed at point of referral and what constitutes a good quality referral.
• Develop knowledge around strategy meetings and S47 enquiries, including who is required to contribute and associated duties.
• Develop understanding of how other agency processes, including child protection medicals, police investigations and LADO investigations, can run alongside S47s and safeguard against the S47 process being absorbed into these.
• Develop knowledge of when parental consent can be overridden.
• Identify when review strategy meetings should be convened.
• Develop understanding of how adult services can and should contribute to the process, and how best to include them.

How is the course delivered? This free half-day course is delivered by an LSCP trainer and there are both in-person and online options available.
